As is the way with most design trends, people look to make their creations fit in with the current look and feel of their marketplace but also be distinctive.
A difficult tightrope to walk, but unless you are out to shock or be deliberately obtuse, there is a lot to be said for familiarity in design. You set the stage for your audience, using the familiarity to do a lot of the groundwork for you. The skill comes in using that and still creating something memorable and distinctive.
